We want to empower you to learn some new skills with some experienced teachers from the community. These workshops will be by donation and we suggest you arrive early if there is a specific one you’d like to attend.
8:30-11:00- Learn how to sew:
Come make your own stuffed animal! New to sewing or it’s been a while since you handled a needle and thread? This workshop will teach you the basics, and you will walk away with a handsewn animal of your own creation. You’re welcome to bring your own fabric, or materials will be provided.
8:30- 12:00- Sewing Machine 101
Learn the ins and outs of a sewing machine in this hands-on workshop. Once you have those down, we will teach you how to make a bag from upcycled jeans. Space is limited, so arrive early for the best chance of a spot.
11:00-3:00- Sashiko/ Visible mending:
Learn how to fix or create some flare to your clothing.
Sashiko- Is a traditional Japanese visible mending technique using simple running stitches and heavy cotton thread to reinforce or repair textiles, usually over a fabric patch.
Visible mending- Is a creative way to stylize repairs done on clothing. This can be done with thread and patches.
We suggest you bring in a piece of clothing that you would like to add some mending onto.
12:00- 3:00- Knitting
Learn the fundamentals of knitting including how to use needles and yarn.
What not to bring:
For the safety of our volunteers, we cannot repair the following:
• appliances that use gas (including camp stoves).
• appliances with damaged power cords/plugs.
• large appliances. If you can't carry it by hand to Re-Fest, it's too big for our team to tackle.
